The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised several IS standards for Personal Protective Equipment over the past two years. For contractors, project managers, and safety officers, staying compliant is not optional — and the penalties for non-compliance have increased significantly.
Key Standards to Know:
IS 2925:2024 — Industrial Safety Helmets — The updated standard now includes mandatory side-impact testing and improved retention system requirements. Helmets manufactured before 2023 may no longer meet the revised criteria. Ensure your stock carries the updated ISI mark.
IS 15298 (Part 2) — Safety Footwear — Now aligned more closely with EN ISO 20345, this revision increases the toe cap impact energy requirement and adds slip resistance testing on new surface types. All safety shoes must now display the updated IS mark.
IS 3521 (Part 1):2021 — Fall Protection Harnesses — Full body harnesses must now meet revised dynamic performance tests. This directly affects workers at height on construction, telecom towers, and industrial maintenance.
What This Means for Your Project:
Sites audited by labour inspectors are increasingly checking for updated IS marks on PPE. Using outdated certified equipment — even if physically undamaged — can result in compliance failures, project delays, and fines under the BOCW Act.
Our Recommendation: Audit your current PPE stock against updated IS standards at least once per year. Josh Safety Equipments can help you identify compliant products across all categories.
